Background
The Society of Ethiopian Women in Science and Technology (SEWiST) is a non-profit non-governmental organization established with the support from the then Ethiopian Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) the current Ministry of Innovation and Technology (MinT). Being aware of the fact that females are less represented in Science and Technology fiels and the male female ratio disparity increases as females go to the next education level as well as very few assume leadership positions in the field, the ministry organized a consultative meeting to discuss what to do to alleviate this problem in December, 2012.
- Then an adhoc committee was established, a bylaw was prepared and the society get registered as an Ethiopian society in accordance with the organization of civil society (CSO) proclamation No. 621/2009 as of Dec. 2013 with registration No.3181. (Legally registered on Tahsas 10, 2006 E.C.).
It was established with a motto "Empowering & Inspiring Ethiopian Women to Lead Science, Technology & Innovation". SEWiST was also established with the aim of encouraging Ethiopian women to actively involve in science, technology, research and innovation for the development of Ethiopia.
